Can't mount NFS share - Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to get console path for volume

I'm trying to mount an NFS volume on ESXI 6, but keep running into this error.  Googling about hasn't helped, so here I am. Error:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.CreateNasDatastore" for object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi "192.168.xx.xx" failed.

Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to get console path for volume, sample name.

The NFS share is located on a synology nas. I've checked permissions and configuration. Everything looks correct based on the various tips and KB articles.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks I'll take a look and see if there seems to be a difference in time keeping.  Its very noticeable on one vRO server in particular.

I agree 100%.  I have been proud of my VCP For years.  I was able to "keep" my Vcp5 by taking the VCP5 exam a second time....VCP6 was unavailable by the two year expiration date...so yeah, took the VCP5 delta to keep my VCP5....

Making a cert expire based on time without a guarantee of new version with in that time is crazy.  To take it away is offensive.

WIll I update to VCP6 in the next 7 months?  Probably not.  Might be better to spend some time getting familiar with hyper-v or AWS.  Regardless I will keep the VCP on my resume, but change the name to something like "Former VCP (switched to AWS)".

Suspend gets stuck in Fusion 8.1

On a Macbook Pro running El Capitan, I am running fusion 8.1, with a Windows 7 guest.

Just now, I wanted to retart my Mac:

  • So I tried to  close Fusion, which automatically suspended the VW. This is the right thing to do, of course. The Windows 7 VM was in sleep mode, which I wouldn't expect to matter.
  • The suspend just keeps running without finishing, although I can see in the Activity Monitor, that vmware-vmx is using about 400% of memory.

I work in this VM all day, every day and it always works perfectly ... up til now.

Can I just kill Fusion and hope that the VM will work properly after I restart my mac and start up Fusion? I don't know if I have any options, since I have been waiting for an hour, hoping that the suspend will overcome any timeouts and exit.

thanks for any help,

Peter

Horizon 7 - RTAV microphone audio quality hard limited to only 8kHz - workaround?

$

Blast Extreme is great but unfortunately RTAV doesn't offer better audio recording quality. The audio still hard limited to 8kHz mono and there is no way to increase it.

2 years ago we were looking to increase audio recording quality in RTAV but this setting is not adjustable (see this post https://communities.vmware.com/thread/480070?start=0&tstart=0)

So the only option is to use Teradici Audio driver with PCOIP and this way all is fine. But Teradici doesn't work with Blast Extreme.

Is there a way to "tweak" RTAV to get better bi-directional audio quality?

Sorry, I have just checked that AppVolumes 2.10 (released in Nov 2015) does not support Instant Clones (Horizon 7 released in March 2016) and the 3.0 version has got the support.

Hello to anyone who reads this,

I couldn't think of any magic way to handle this. All the power options were grayed out.

While holding my breath, I killed the vmware-vmx process, which then allowed me to exit fusion through the menu.

After restarting the Mac, Fusion came up and I could start the VM. As windows does, it noted that it had stopped unexpectedly last time. I told it to start normally and it came up, working fine. Needless to say, I have lost the state that it was in, with the running processes, but that is a non-issue.

Conclusion: while I couldn't force suspend to finish normally, killing Fusion worked and all is ok.

thanks, help this is helpful to others.

Hi,

re 1. You mentioned "you read somewhere" .. Looks like you seen it here: VMware Fusion Pro: Professional Mac Virtualization

quote (emphasis mine)

For added control users can manually specify the GPU to use, or let Fusion 8 Pro automatically decide, providing you the best performance while least impacting your battery life without sacrificing choice. Fusion Pro will even suspend your virtual machine automatically when you close the lid, preventing any battery drain while you’re on the go.

That's really the first time I've seen this and I"m not even sure what they mean by it as everything gets suspended when you close the lid anyways (?)

I'll leave it to somebody else - like somebody from VMware - to clarify if it is a "Pro" feature only.

re 2. Yeah well.. in that case your VM is no good and will have a number of unfixable problems, you really should remove any hardware specific software drivers. If you're not the administrator you cannot fix that, I'm even a bit surprised that you could install the software to migrate to a VM then.

FWIW, the windows license is probably bound to the hardware anyways (OEM Windows license) so -most likely- running it as a VM isn't even legal within the Windows EULA.

Objects inaccessible. All object components marked STALE.

Just testing the VSAN 6.2 (v3) with 3 node (name them A,B,C) cluster in my lab. Decided to simulate some power loss on all nodes but with some delay.

Had 8VMs running a disk benchmark at the time of power loss.

First I shut down the node C. Waited for 5 minutes and powered off A and B with 2 seconds interval.

Waited for a couple of minutes and started to power on but in reverse.

I deliberately powered on the C first knowing the data on it will be outdated. I wanted to test how the cluster recovers.

After 2 minutes I turned on two remaining hosts.

During the boot process ESXi spend several minutes initializing the VSAN disks. Even though the C started first there was a period of time when all three host were in VSAN initialization process at the same time.

I thought it will be enough for the system to resynchronize but I was wrong!

After all 3 hosts were online 3 out of 8 MWs were in the Inaccessible STATE. 3 other VMs were accessible but out of sync. 2 were healthy.

The cluster is stuck on rebuilding of one object. The object is only 1GB but after 10 hours it is in the same state:

Examining of the inaccessible objects further shows that some of them have All components ACTIVE, but marked as STALE! Other have 2 components ACTIVE one missing but all marked STALE.

I tried to fix it with the  "vsan.check_state –r –e ~cluster"  command but it didn’t change anything. I also tried to go the Virtal SAN tab in vsphere client and repair it with “Repair object immediately” button but it was greyed out.

Does anybody have the solution for the problem?

Shouldn’t there be any tool to tell the VSAN what of the STALE object to use if all in such state?

Shouldn’t there be an automatic recovering of situation like this in the Enterprise class solutions?

Starting VMware Tool Services... [fail]

Hello,

I am using VMware Workstation 12 Player (with host = Windows 8.1, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz, 64-bit o.s.) (and guest =Ubuntu14.04-LTS).

My problem is that I cannot see and mount on my virtual machine the "Shared Folders": indeed the path "/mnt/hgfs/" is empty... and I am quite sure that the problem is about the VMware Tools.

When I power the virtual machine, I see this line:

...

Starting VMware Tool Services                        [fail]

...

I attach in a document the picture of my virtual machine setting regarding the VMware Tools.

I have already installed all the components, through the following issue:

Player ---> File ---> Preferences --> Download All Components Now --->

---> All downloadable components are up to date

I have also tried to remove and add again the shared folder but nothing happens...

Some days ago, I could open the Shared Folders, modify the file either in the host or in the guest and I did not have any problems... The only operation I have done so far maybe is to "Install Software Updates" in my virtual machine... and to create some new files in the host shared folder.

Thank you for your attention,

please help me!

Bye,

Francesco

location scratch directory when booting from SD card

In https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalId=1033696

It says:

Note: Scratch space is configured automatically during installation or first boot of an ESXi host, and is not required to be manually configured. ESXi Installable creates a 4 GB Fat16 partition on the target device during installation if there is sufficient space, and if the device is considered Local.

About the "sufficient space for 4GB" and "considered Local".

Under WHAT conditions does VMware think those conditions are met when one wants to use an SD card to boot from

We have been booting from SD cards on all sites where we have SANs. I want to have a persistent scratch location at those sites as well.

Of course I can and do relocate the syslog to the SAN but in case there is a problem with the connection to the SAN I would like to have the logs preserved as well.

So please explain what you plan to get, because is not clear to me.

Because other type of information can only be get with 3rd party tools for monitoring or Change Management(vRealize, vCenter Operations Manager, Veeam ONE, VMturbo Operations Manager, etc)
